little americaTalented young film-maker Yoza Mnyanda won a competition backed by the Gauteng Film Commission, in which five young Gauteng-based women were each asked to create short 20 minute films that focussed on music, art, food and lifestyle.

The GFC partnered with the international digital content company TRACE, which specialises in afro-urban entertainment, and which provided the funding for the competition. Yoza Mnyanda’s documentary Little America won after a public vote. The documentary is about local artists’ use of American gimmicks to sell their music. The film also looks at the lack of airplay for artists who are making music that is authentic to the locale and why that is.
