Gauteng Film Commission is once again a VIP Sponsor of the Johannesburg leg of the international 48 Hour Film Project, which will be screened at the Barnyard Theatre in Cresta Mall on Sunday, October 21.

More than 50 film production teams took part in the local contest to conceive, shoot and edit a movie in just two days, held over the weekend of September 23rd. The completed films are ready for screening, and the Johannesburg winner for 2018 will be announced following the Sunday night screenings. The Johannesburg winner will then go on to compete internationally against other winners from 130 cities around the world, including Cape Town.

The 48 Hour Film Project was conceived as a wild experiment in Washington DC in the USA in 2001, to find out whether it was possible to make a watchable movie from nothing in 48 hours. The experiment proved such exhilarating fun that it swept around the world, becoming a formal annual international competition to encourage film making. Some 30 000 films have been made.

Teams can be any size – in some cases a team has consisted of a single person doing everything from scriptwriting to acting. On the Friday night when the contest begins, teams draw from a hat the genre they must follow. They are given a character, a prop and a line which they must include in their film. On the Sunday night, following a wild dash to the drop off event, the exhausted teams celebrate with a huge party.

The Gauteng Film Commission’s role is to support the job-creation potential of the movie industry in the province, in particular in previously disadvantaged communities and among the youth. The 48 Hour Film Project provides an ideal vehicle for this mission.

Given the large number of films made in Johannesburg, the initial screenings have been divided into four groups with 12 to 14 films in each. The screenings will cost R70 per evening.
