The GFC is once again sponsoring the Women in Film category of the Passing the Torch Awards.  Initiated by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (DED) in 2005, the Awards demonstrate the Province’s commitment to the empowerment of women.  The initiative is aimed at identifying business women in the Province, and honouring them for their extraordinary efforts in making Gauteng a better place to work and live in.

The key objectives of the Awards are to

  • Recognise outstanding women in the six operational sectors of the Gauteng Economy
  • Recognise  unsung heroes- women in the six sectors of the DED operation
  • Encourage mentoring among women
  • Stage a network session
  • Emphasise the role Women play in the building of a better life for all.

The six areas are Women in Film, Women in Finance, Women in Infrastructure development, Women in Tourism and Hospitality, Women in Services and Manufacturing, and Women in Trade.

The Women in Film awards will be presented to women who through their endurance and the excellence of their work in the film industry have contributed to the film industry in Gauteng and helped expand the role of women in the industry.  Last year’s winner was Isabelle Rorke, co-founder of Anamazing Workshop and a major force in animation production, training and development in Gauteng (for an interview with Isabelle by In Focus, click here )
“We are proud to once again be associated with this prestigious initiative and to be involved in recognising key women players in the Film Industry.  One has only to look at the inspiration that people such as Isabelle provide to our youth, to women and to our industry in general to realise the value of their contribution to all facets of our lives,” says Terry Tselane, Chief Executive Officer of GFC.

This year, the Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday, 28 August at the Sandton Convention Centre, hosted by the MEC Paul Mashatile.
