Johannesburg has lost none of its glitter and continues to be one of South Africa's favourite feature film locations with both local and international filmmakers.  Most recently the city provided the setting for South African-born director Neill Blomkamp's exciting debut feature, District 9.

Produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) and Carolynne Cunningham (Lord of the Rings, King Kong), District 9 uniquely blends classic sci fi with Africanculture in contemporary Johannesburg.Shot entirely on location in and around Johannesburg and Soweto's historic Kliptown, District 9 is facilitated by Cape Town production outfit Kalahari Pictures.  The film features a South African cast headed up by Sharlto Copley (Spoon) with Jason Cope (Pure Monate Show), David James (Snitch), Kenneth Nkosi (Tsotsi), Mandla Gaduka and Vanessa Haywood.

The Gauteng Film Commission, which provided support and assistance with Government liaison during production, sees this as yet another step towards making Gauteng Africa's premier film and television destination.  This reflects an ever-increasing interest in by foreign filmmakers in the excellent infrastructure, locations and skills base that Gauteng offers.

District 9 is scheduled for release internationally in 2009.
