Following on from the successful and thought-provoking inaugural Film Indaba, hosted by the GFC last year, the date and topics for this year's event have been announced.  Book Wednesday 12 November 2008 in your diary and come to the Sandton Convention Centre for a day of networking, knowledge sharing and engaging discussion at Film Indaba 2008.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup SA will offer opportunities for showcasing the province and its locations, and is already having an impact on the technological and infrastructural asset base. From locations to crew to equipment providers and content programming, the event offers potential benefits to the Gauteng audio-visual industry.

Yet what will the local film and TV industries look like in 2010 and beyond? Are we on track to building a sustainable local film industry - an industry in which independent filmmaking thrives? Are we adequately prepared for the many challenges ahead such as a lack of resources and limited access to markets?

The Film Indaba 2008 brings together key role-players to explore and discuss a vibrant and sustainable local film industry.

Hosted by the Gauteng Film Commission, this year's Indaba will summon audio-visual industry representatives, media, community, government officials, politicians, business and funders/ financiers in constructive dialogue and celebration, aimed at propelling the Gauteng audio-visual industry, Beyond 2010!

Building on last year's successful gathering, the 2008 event will focus on various innovative, developmental and sustainability topics, all guided by the theme - A Global City Region, Beyond 2010.

A definite must-attend at this year's gathering is the presentation by Dr Nikolaus Eberl, of the Nations of Champs Initiative.  Titled Can film leverage soccer? this insightful presentation will unpack lessons from the FIFA World Cup held in Germany and offer guidelines on how the Gauteng audio-visual industry can maximise on the 2010 experience.

Other topics to be explored during the Indaba include:

  • Building a Global Film Centre - the experience of London and New Mexico;
  • Beyond 2010 - Five eminent panelists discuss the state of the industry now and beyond 2010;

  • The Financial Sweet Pot - is there still a financing success formula for independent filmmaking?

  • The distant relative? This session looks at commercial sector and ways in which Gauteng can retain a strong position.

  • Film through partnership - Is there an integrated partnership between government and the film industry?

  • Transformation - Is transformation a reality and priority in the film industry?

  • Film Infrastructure / Capacity - Does Gauteng have adequate film infrastructure / capacity?

As per tradition, the Film Indaba 2008 will close with an evening cocktail party. Rumor has it that this year's occasion promises to be something the industry will remember for a long time to come. Full details of the evening event will be publicised in due course.
