Attendees at the National Film and Video Foundation's two-day Film Indaba (26 - 27 November 2009) raised some pertinent questions, says the NFVF's Eddie Mbalo.

The Indaba, was set to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing filmmakers and producers, in a year that has seen a depressed financial climate and a crisis at the SABC.

"How do we develop a sustainable business, how do we develop ourselves to an extend that we do not get caught up in crises like the recession and the SABC," said Mbalo.

In the build-up to the Indaba, the NFVF said discussions would centre around the second edition of the NFVF Value Charter, which delegates from the film industry will contribute towards in order to be adopted by the NFVF Council, the Department of Arts and Culture and Cabinet. The five topics to be tacked during the second day of breakaway discussions highlighted out of the draft second edition were:

  • Policy alignment, intergovernmental and stakeholder relations
  • Building a sustainable business
  • Human capital development
  • Development and Growth of Markets
  • Making an economic case for the industry
