The redevelopment of Newtown has been identified as a key focus area for Johannesburg city's government. Newtown is being developed into a vibrant, mixed-use area with a unique character based on existing cultural facilities. It is home to most of Johannesburg's arts and cultural attractions and landmarks. New kid on the block, event space and conferencing venue The Forum, Turbine Hall reflects the character of the Newtown area, interpreted to meet the standards of the Forum Company (well known Johannesburg conference and events group).

The Forum at Turbine Hall brings world class filming location to industrial landmark
Once home to Johannesburg's first coal-fired power station Turbine Hall has been firmly rooted in the skyline of Johannesburg for decades. After years of neglect, the building has successfully been given a new lease on its colourful history.

 

Glynis Hyslop, MD of The Forum Company, saw the potential in restoring the space. She realised she could transform it into a distinctive venue for functions, conferences and other events, a notion that aligned perfectly with the mission of The Forum Company, an organisation that strives to consistently deliver world-class food and gatherings with a uniquely South African personality and style.

Glynis was determined to preserve Turbine Hall, so throughout the renovation process she ensured that every design change was approved by the Heritage committee. As a result the refurbishment of Turbine Hall took almost two years to complete, but it was well worth the wait and the effort. The Forum Company, in conjunction with TPS Architects and developers TIBER BONVEC and Renlia, have created a building that not only truly displays South African design while maintaining the building's original architectural principle. By demolishing one of the three main structures, the design has remained as true to the original as possible.

The Forum, Turbine Hall provides passerby's with a peek into the city's architectural style of the 1920's and 1930's, while interiors are clean, crisp and contemporary, complementing the industrial nature of the building without being a cold industrial space. The atmosphere created by the decor is eclectic, with the focus on creating a personalised, versatile and functional space.

Facilities comprise 8 conference rooms and 8 function venues with a capacity to host conferences varying from 10 - 500 people, dinners for up to 390 and cocktail parties for up to 1000. In addition, there is underground parking for up to 220 vehicles and a dedicated reception desk.
