place at the Global Access studios in Fox Street Johannesburg.

Mandla Thabethe, the producer/director spoke to In Focus:

In Focus: What's this new series about?
Thabethe: Family Bonds is a story of a young couple, Themba and Buyi Vilakazi, who have recently moved from the East Coast township of uMlazi to the (beginners) suburbs of uMbilo. They've hardly settled into their new home when numerous family members started to pour in -with no intention of leaving.

In Focus: Can you give us a little more of the storyline?
Thabethe: Buyi's grandmother arrives with her suitcases on their doorstep needing a change of scenery. Themba's half brother, who he has not seen for more than a decade, shows up and becomes too comfortable. Buyi's cousin comes to town looking for work.

Forced by African tradition and custom to put up with their relatives' arrival, Themba and Buyi find themselves having no other choice but to make room in their lives for all of them, which means kissing goodbye to their privacy. The whole situation becomes chaotic.

As if that is not enough, the handy man, who stays in the backroom and has been quiet all along, now starts behaving like a member of the family.
Will the Vilakazi's ever get rid of these people? Will they ever know how it feels like to be on their own? You will have to watch to find out!

In Focus: Who are the main production crew and key cast?
Thabethe: I am the producer, the performance director was Nyembezi Kunene and the technical director was Deon Potgieter. The key cast includes Ndumiso Dlamini (Themba), Phumzile Mlangeni (Buyi), Thabo Mnguni (Bra-Steve), Lawrancia Mthembu (Gogo), Xoli Zondi (Winnie) and Mandla Thabethe (Bongo).

In Focus: Please advise the shooting and post production format.
Thabethe: We shot in studio using four cameras with live switching. The Global Access studio was great and ideal for the application. We had a total of 23 crew members, and the post production was done on Final Cut Pro.

In Focus: When will Family Bonds hit our TV screens?
Thabethe: It will be shown on SABC 1 on Mondays at 7pm. The final broadcast date is still to be advised.
