South African students interested in a career in electronic media stand a chance to win a share of R2-million worth of bursaries for studies in animation, graphic design, television and radio production through a partnership between SABC Education and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (Nemisa).

The courses on offer include:

Graphic Design Diploma

This three-year programme provides visual communication skills in traditional print media, digital and interactive media and motion graphics. The course covers a vast amount of graphic knowledge production through theoretical, practical and technological components of the field. The course is aimed at the development of holistic multimedia practitioners whose capacity includes: art direction, graphic design, web development, and the production of motion graphics. Supportive elements include commerce subjects and writing for multimedia.

  • Entrance requirements: Matric/Grade 12/NQF Level 4 related qualification, Maths and English at NQF Level 4, entrance exam, and visual portfolio.

Animation Diploma

A three-year programme based on traditional and digital animation designed to cover the entire value chain of animation production. The course exposes students to theoretical, practical and technological components of animation production. The course aims to prepare students for the competitive marketplace of animation and digital graphics production, and equips them with key skills of interpretation, visualisation, conceptualisation, production and technical application. Following a first year of traditional animation studies, students pursue digital animation in the second and final years. Graduates will acquire the skills necessary to work independently, collaboratively and in studio settings.

  • Entrance requirements: Matric/Grade 12/NQF Level 4 related qualification, Maths and English at NQF Level 4, entrance exam, and visual portfolio.

National Certificate in Radio Production

This qualification equips students for the world of work in radio broadcasting. The course prepares you for roles in research, operation of studio equipment, producing all formats from features to music shows, scriptwriting, interview techniques and a host of vital radio roles. Above all it provides access to formal qualification.

  • Entrance requirements: Matric or Grade 12 certificate; language and communication competence at NQF 4; Mathematical Literacy at NQF 4; Computer Literacy at NQF 1.

About Nemisa

Nemisa has been training young people from diverse backgrounds since the year 2000. This started with training students on a fulltime basis in the areas of television and radio production, with just under 40 students a year. The students primarily came from disadvantaged backgrounds with emphasis on women who made up at least 60% of the student population. Nemisa has grown over the years and now produces more than 870 graduates a year, with all its courses accredited by Mappp Seta.
