Various partners and stakeholders are expected to gather at the Creative Industries Indaba, where solutions will be sought for the growth of the sector. The Gauteng Film Commission will be among the stakeholders taking part in a one-day event.

The Creative Industries Indaba is being held to help forge strong partnerships within the crafts, music, visual and performing arts sectors.

The indaba, hosted by the Gauteng department of sport, arts, culture and recreation, will take place at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg on 28 February. The department will also launch its partnerships with Proudly South African on issues of common mandates.

About 300 delegates are expected from Gauteng at the indaba, where the government will discuss its progress in implementing strategies around the Creative Industries Development Framework. It will also look at the effect of the framework on the crafts, music, visual and performing arts sectors.

According to the MEC, Lebogang Maile, this indaba will not be another talk-shop but will help to find solutions for the growth of the industry. "As Gauteng is the gateway into Africa and a culturally dynamic province, everything about it needs to meet standards in both local and international markets," said Maile.

"Previous studies done on Gauteng's creative industries revealed that the sector contributed over R13-billion to the province's [gross domestic product], so it is important that the indaba also ensures the alignment of the industries' activities with the growth and development strategies of the government."

Through their partnership, the department and Proudly South African will run campaigns around shared mandates. They are both mandated to promote national pride and patriotism, and encourage social cohesion and nation building, as well as support the local economy, among others.

"It made sense that we launch the partnership with Proudly South African at the indaba to also exploit possible partnerships that can boost the sector. At the moment, the creative industries are faced with, among others, the issue of local support, piracy and more. With the establishment of the Creative Industries Agency, we believe some of the challenges can also begin to find solutions through partnerships like these," said Maile.

Proudly South African's chief executive, Leslie Sedibe, said the organisation welcomed the partnership "and believes that co-operation between the two parties can contribute significantly towards boosting the sector and assisting in the growth of the industry and the local economy, especially through encouraging an uptake of local products and services".
