Help is at hand for local filmmakers who want to go to the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in the Big Apple, from the DTI and SA's New York embassy. The festival, which runs from 17 to 28 April in New York, aims to help filmmakers reach as wide an audience as possible.

The Gauteng Film Commission, in conjunction with the Cape Film Commission and the Durban Film Office, has joined forces with the South African Embassy in New York and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to help get a group of South African film-makers to the Tribeca Film Festival.

The festival, which runs from 17 to 28 April in New York, aims to help film-makers reach as wide an audience as possible by giving the international film community and general public the opportunity to experience the power of cinema. Since 2002, more than 1 300 movies from over 80 countries have been screened at the festival, which over the years has attracted an international audience of more than 3.7 million people. There has also been a tremendous financial benefit for New York City, with the festival earning about $725-million (about R6.4-billion) since it began.

Members of the Gauteng and Cape film commissions and the Durban Film Office who would like to participate in the venture should notify their local commission or office on the following email addresses:

Specific documentation should be sent with your application:

•A letter of motivation describing reasons for inclusion in the programme; and

•The documents listed under the DTI requirements, which should be hand-delivered to the relevant offices by no later than 2pm on 18 January. Late entries will not be considered.

Requirements of the DTI:

•Complete project proposals including budgets, timelines and job opportunities;

•Project synopsis;

•Company profile;

•Biography or CV of person representing the company/travelling to the festival;

•Aims, objectives and project outcomes;

•Proposed aims, objectives and outcomes for attending the festival and market;

•Marketing plan;

•Brochure/show reel (with high resolution images);

•Customs and excise certificate if exporting materials;

•Tax clearance certificate;

•Last financial year's audit financial statement or three months' bank statements on a certified bank letterhead;

•Confirmation of bank details – original letter from bank verifying bank details; and

•Original certified copy of passport.

Applicants must have a valid passport, be able to pay for a valid visa as well as for travel insurance. Please visit the Sector Specific Assistance Scheme (SSAS) on the DTI's website for guidelines. Applications must be clearly marked with the name of the applicant's company and the festival's name.
