South African films Man on Ground and Otelo Burning were the big winners at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the pan-African TV network Africa Magic’s maiden awards ceremony, which saw the cream of the continent’s film industry converge on Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday 9 March.

Screened live to viewers in 50 countries, the awards allowed viewers to vote for the winners in six of the 26 categories. The remaining categories were decided by a panel of experts from across Africa, headed by Nigerian filmmaker Femi Odugbemi.

After weeks of voting and judging, the winners were announced at a lavish event at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos. Otelo Burning won four awards, including Best Film Overall. Akin Omotoso won Best director for Man On Ground, which also garnered the Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound Design awards. Skeem, another South African movie, got the nod for Best Comedy and Best Writing (Comedy).
