SOBUKWE-Poster-2012D

In celebration of Human Rights Day, 21 March, the Gauteng Film Commission in partnership with Born Free Media will host two screenings of the drama-documentary Sobukwe: A Great Soul at the Soweto Amphitheatre.

The first screening will be on Wednesday 20 March at 7pm, and the second on Thursday 21 March at 2pm.

Comissioned by the SABC as part of its Icons series, the movie will also be broadcast, in two parts, on SABC1 on 20 and 27 March at 9pm.

Sobukwe: A Great Soul is the story of South African struggle hero and black consciousness pioneer Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe (1924 – 1978), a global visionary, teacher, philosopher, spiritualist and humanist. Yet Sobukwe’s voice, a voice that once inspired and helped liberate a nation, has been silenced. There is not a single piece of archive, not even a single surviving audio recording of a man who was once one of the most watched, most recorded, most high-profile political prisoner in the world, a man well ahead of his time in his use of the word “non-racial” in a racist world, who confounded all when he asserted: “There is only one race, the human race.”

“It is encumbent upon all of us to ensure that Sobukwe’s name does not die,” says director Mickey Madoda Dube, director of Sobukwe: A Great Soul. “For in doing so, we are laying a foundation for a future that will be driven by values we would like to be known by, values of humanity, integrity, truth, responsibility, selflessness, and commitment. This is what Sobukwe died for, and the greatest honour we can give him is to rekindle these values in ourselves.”

The film won the Amnesty International Human Rights Award for Best Film with a Focus on Human Rights at the 32nd Durban International Film Festival in 2011 and was screened at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles in February 2012.

The documentary was commissioned by the SABC as part of their Icons series on South African leader and produced by Born Free Media and 1TakeMedia in association with the Robert Sobukwe Family Trust.
