Three South African films - all of them made in Gauteng - won four awards between them at the 12th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Port Harcourt, Nigeria on Saturday, 11 June.

Akin Omotoso's Joburg love story Tell Me Sweet Something won two AMAA 2016 awards, for Achievement in Screenplay and for Thishiwe Ziqubu, who was named Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Dance feature film Hear Me Move came away with the Achievement in Editing award, while Fulu Mugovhani was named Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of a 21-one year old Afro-hipster in Ayanda.

The 12th edition of "Africa's Oscars", which is run by a privately funded organisation, took place at the Obi Wali International Conference Center in Port Harcourt under the theme "Promoting peace through entertainment".

The ceremony was hosted by Nollywood star Mike Ezuruonye, South African radio host Kgopedi Lilokoe, and Ghanaian actor and TV presenter Chris Attoh. Zambia's Mark Zulu, Ghanaian dancehall artist Rashid and Nigeria's Kcee were among the performers at the event.

Top honours on the night went to Burkino Faso filmmaker Sekou Toure, whose Eye of the Storm won the AMAA 2016 Best Film Award. UK-based Ghanaian filmmaker Nana Obiri Yeboah was named Best Director for The Cursed One, which also won the Best Cinematography and Best Production Design awards.

Despite losing out on Best Film and Best Director, Nigeria's film industry still dominated the proceedings, winning 10 out of the 26 awards on offer. The Lifetime Achievement Awards were also a Nollywood affair, with all three recipients, including husband-and-wife pairing Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva, being Nigerian.

Burkina Faso matched South Africa with four AMAA awards, while Ghana, thanks to The Cursed One, won three. The only other African countries among the winners (which included Diaspora countries) were Niger and Ethiopia.
