Pop, Lock 'n Roll, which opened at the end of September, is an entertaining and amusing South African dance musical, based on a gangster theme.

The story centres on an ambitious and materialistic dancer from Westbury in Johannesburg, whose career takes a dangerous turn when he falls in love with the beautiful Brazilian wife of his producer – who also happens to be a major gangster.

The film was originally intended to be based among the gangs of the Cape Flats, but the location has been moved to Westbury in Gauteng, which has its own share of gangs. The film stars Maurice Page as Raps the dancer, Yasirah Bhelz as the Brazilian beauty, and Lionel Newton, Jason Meyer, Robyn Brophy, Tarryn Alberts and David Johnson.

The film, which has been many years in the making, is directed by Ziggy Hofmeyr and produced by Pascal Schmitz. They launched a nationwide search for S.A’s best street style dance talent, as well as a crowd funding campaign to raise a portion of the budget. Joziewood Films produced the movie, in collaboration with Amariam Pictures.
