WGSA Muse Awards

The finalists for South Africa's premier scriptwriting competition, the WGSA Muse Awards 2016, have been announced, with the winners set to be unveiled at a ceremony at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg on 11 February.

Initiated by the Writers' Guild of South Africa in 2013, the WGSA Muse Awards recognise and celebrate the crucial role that performance writers in film, television, radio, stage and new media play in the country's entertainment industry.

The fourth edition of the Muse Awards boasts a record 11 award categories, including an award for Best Gauteng Writer, which is sponsored by the Gauteng Film Commission.

"We are elated to have M-Net, the Gauteng Film Commission and, for the first time, the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission on board as sponsors," the WGSA said in a statement.

With a record number of entries received, the benchmark has been set high for this year. The panel of first-round judges, including many of the biggest names in the local industry (see list below), have chosen the top three scripts that reached or surpassed the minimum judging criteria in each category.

From these, the winners will be selected by a new set of judges including big name international writers, agents and Writers' Guild representatives from around the world.
