21sepThe Gauteng Film Commission will participate at the Inaugural Career Expo for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing scheduled to take place on Friday 21st September 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf. The Week  is commemorated annually during the last week of September and its purpose is to draw the attention of the public, Government and business leaders towards the issues that affect the deaf community. During the commemoration week, all organisations for deaf people across the world are encouraged to create awareness of the requirements to fulfil the demands and needs of deaf people as well as ensuring that their rights are protected.

The International Week of the Deaf In commemoration of the 2018 Week, Neema Foundation & Royalty Communications will be hosting the first Inaugural Career Expo for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as well as the 2nd Annual Silent Walk. Due to the disability and sometimes the stigma faced by individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing who are sometimes inadvertently excluded from mainstream society, the majority don’t have a broad knowledge of where economic opportunities exist.

The Career Expo is scheduled to take place on Friday 21st September- Sunday 23rd September 2018 at the Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg. The Expo is aimed to raise awareness on the importance of Education amongst the Deaf community; Showcase Career paths that are available to the Deaf and Hard of hearing scholars. The Career Expo affords Corporate South Africa the opportunity to showcase available careers and options for the deaf community.

The Career Expo will be attended by Grade 6-12 scholars of Deaf Schools around Gauteng, unemployed Youth and Women within the deaf communities, Parents and teachers. Proceeds from the stand sales as well as entries of the silent walk will be used to buy stationary for disadvantaged Deaf Children from Grade 4-12, as well as support Matric Winter Schools in 2019.
