alex tbOn the 12th December 2019, Alex Arts Academy will host its first Open Day as it celebrates the success of the year 2019 and looking forward to future successes.

The open day is meant to introduce parents and stakeholders to the workings and operations of the Academy. It is also a platform to assess the progress of our students by giving them an opportunity to perform what they have learned in the last six months in front of an audience. The students will perform a potpourri of music, drama, dance, poetry and showcase three of their shot films.

The arts have since become the Messiah and gold for Alexandra Township, with a history of notorious, cunning and murderous gangs and poverty. Gomorrah as Alex is affectionately known has come a long way to cleans itself to become home to a galaxy of television and film stars, leading theatre practitioners, top notch arts administrators, technical and production professionals of note, this includes amongst others Mpho. J Molepo, Harriet Manamela, Lebogang Oliphant and a many more .  It is therefore not an act of accident to find a thriving arts academy in the heart of Alex. 

Founded in February 2019 by well-known arts administrator, Actor, Director and activist Mr. Mpho J Molepo, Alexandra Arts Academy has grown by leaps and bounds. Alex Arts Academy has enrolled One Hundred and two (102) learners who are taught in different disciplines of performing arts including dance, drama, film, music, technical studies and arts management.

The school has various classes including a film and television Training in partnership with Leaders in Motion - the course started in July 2019 to July 2020 training is accredited by MICSETA and has an intake 37 students. 

25 full time drama students are trained in music, dance, arts management, technical studies and theatre. This classes are held at San Kopano Centre, Alexandra. The class has an age range of seventeen to 30. 

20 learners are enrolled in part time classes are held every Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00 at Alex San Kopano Centre. This class is about access and is open for intake throughout the year with an increasing number.

Award winning actress, theatre trainer, indigenous games guru Matlakala Motaung leads a group of 20 learners in children theatre, she offers training in applied theatre, music, dance and theatre making. This group is aged between 5years and 12 years.

A total of One Hundred and two leaners (102) are enrolled at Alex Arts Academy studying, drama, dance, film, arts management and music. The academy has formed working relations with a lot of credible arts organisations, sponsors and prominent respected arts practitioners Napo Masheane, Baldwin Mncedisi Shabangu, Khutjo Green, Hamilton Ntokozo Dlamini and James Ncgobo to name a few of those who have shared their experiences, knowledge and talents with the learners at Alex Arts Academy through workshops and class hosting.

Gauteng Film Commission has supported the establishment of film and television training which boast 37 learners and is an accredited course with MICSETA, hosted in partnership with Lima as mentioned earlier . The City of Joburg through its Arts Alive International festival sponsored the theatre training workshop, which covered theatre writing, directing, African theatre and politics of theatre.  Etech Varsity has sponsored an administrative training, teaching learners computers skills and operations. The national department of Arts and Culture has granted Alex Arts Academy funding to realize the school in 2019 into 2020.

The management of Alex Arts Academy is embarking on a serious fundraising drive to make sure that this institution grows to the level of an arts center. The Academy have already submitted a letter of intent QCTO for accreditation process Cathseta.
