In fact, Frozen River has also been nominated and won several prestigious awards since release in 2008, including: American Indian Film Festival 2008 - won American Indian Movie Award Best Supporting Actress for Misty Upham; 2009 nominated Critics Choice Award Best Actress for Melissa Leo; Chicago Film Critics Association Awards 2008 - nominated CFCA Award Best Actress for Melissa Leo and Most Promising Filmmaker for Courtney Hunt; the list goes on.

So what is the South African connection? Local company Seed Entertainment, a Johannesburg-based film and TV distribution company, acquired the rights for distribution of Frozen River.

Managing Director, Buli Maliza, who also specialises in media placements and consultation, says Seed Entertainment acquired the rights for Africa a day after the film won the 2008 Sundance Grand Jury Award.

To my mind, it was one the best Indie films of 2008 and has received much critical acclaim.  Quentin Tarantino named it best thriller of 2008.

Frozen River will be released by Nu Metro and South Africas national Broadcaster, the SABC, who will get the first TV screenings.

Other titles handled by Seed Entertainment include Sukiyaki Western Django, a Japanese western featuring Quentin Tarantino and directed by the legendary Japanese director Takashi Mike; as well as Far North, which Ster Kinekor is interested in releasing for their Cinema Nouveau theatres. The movie features Sean Bean from Lords of the Rings and Michelle Yeoh from Memoirs of a Geisha.

Maliza says she has also recently clinched a deal for a film titled Personal Effects, which stars Ashton Kutcher and Michelle Pfeifer.

Seed Entertainment also has under our belt exciting faith-based movies such as All about us, Preaching to the Choir, as well as the stand up comedy by Steve Harvey Still Trippin. This will be released in collaboration with Nu Metro, she says.
