The Jameson First Shot short film competition, which gives talented up-and-coming filmmakers from South Africa, Russia and the US some of the biggest breaks in the movie industry, is back for a second year.

Sponsored by Jameson Irish Whiskey, the competition selects one filmmaker from each country to make a movie with Hollywood star Kevin Spacey, with the additional support of his long-time business partner, producer Dana Brunetti, and their award-winning production company, Trigger Street Productions.

Last year’s winning videos, in which Spacey starred, have been viewed over 5.6-million times on YouTube. This year, the three selected writer-directors will be given a chance to not only make their film with Spacey as creative director and Brunetti as producer, but also direct A-list actor Willem Dafoe.

“In the first year of the competition we found three outstanding filmmakers and as a result we made three incredible films,” said Spacey. “Everyone’s expectations are extremely high for the second year so the entrants for 2013 have a lot to live up to and, if it’s possible, they have even more pressure on them to write a great story and direct an amazing film.

“We know the prize we’re offering is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; now we need to find the talent who are worthy winners.”

Talented filmmakers looking for their big break must submit a script of no more than seven pages via by 16 December 2012. Scripts must be inspired by one of three themes: “legendary”, “humorous” or “a very tall tale”. All scripts will be judged by an expert team that will include Spacey, Brunetti and Dafoe. The judges are looking for freshness, originality, good structure and above all, a great story.

The scripts will then be shortlisted, and each filmmaker on the list required to submit a director’s treatment of their script and a piece of footage based on a provided scene from Trigger Street Productions. Once all entries and submissions have been extensively reviewed, the three winners will be chosen – one from each country – with each getting to fly to Los Angeles to shoot their script and direct Dafoe in the leading role, all with the backing of Kevin Spacey’s production company.
